An Interview with Jac Williams

Hi, my name is Jac Williams. An undergraduate at the University of Liverpool John Moores. I am excited about my role as a Saint Ambassador in helping to support and inspire young engineers on their personal journeys.

Recently, I joined Laing O’Rourke as part of their industrial placement scheme. A programme designed to help enhance your academic studies as well as to boost your in-field experience. A company committed to become net zero before 2050 alongside an equal opportunity company by 2033; an employer that maintains the highest standards with good core values and great ambitions not only in the present time but also for the future. An exciting and informative experience for young individuals, like myself, who are looking to become a part of the industry.

I was fortunate to be based at Hinkley Point C, the first nuclear power station to be built in the UK in over 20 years, helping to provide low carbon electricity for our communities. During the six shorth months that I have been at the project I have gained a great deal of experience academically, professionally and personally. What has stood out the most is the team atmosphere here; I have felt valued and respected since the first day. I have been encouraged to ask questions and to challenge myself, with the full support of team LOR. This has been an invaluable experience so far and I am looking forward to another six months with them. 

How did I start? My first step into the industry was taken shortly after my secondary school examinations. I enrolled on the Construction and The Built Environment BTEC course at Llandrillo Menai college. Here I learnt the basics of construction, a truly inspiring course. A highlight was being awarded the Watkin Jones PLC scholarship for young individuals. With support from my mentors, lecturers, family and friends it enforced my ambition to pursue a role within the industry.

That’s why I am proud to be a part of the Saint ambassadors. I’ve always believed in supporting one another, helping to encourage young individuals on their journeys. Hopefully, along the way, inspiring others to join the industry which always strives to improve society.
