An Interview with Sophia Panayi

I began my career in engineering with Laing O’Rourke during a summer placement scheme between my 3rd and 4th years of university. During the short 3 month placement I had found a company who value and care about my personal career progression. Consequently, I immediately applied for the graduate program. I am now a full time member of the Laing O’Rourke community working as a Site Engineer at Old Oak Common.

Laing O’Rourke have many key values and goals however, as a new starter the values I found the company is really focused on are the career progression of their engineers and their sustainability goals – a reflection of my own goals and values.

My experience with civil engineering began in college when applying for University. Engineering was a very natural path for me to follow due to my A Level choices and my enjoyment for applied mathematics and was seriously considering a General Engineering course. However, after a lot of research I was able to cancel out several of the engineering disciplines due to my preferred lessons.

Once the thought of Civil Engineering came about I discovered a broad and diverse industry where hard work is physically represented. If I could give my younger self some advice when choosing a career path I would remind myself that hard work will always pay off and that any decision you make is not set in stone– there is still so much to learn and plenty of time to make mistakes.
